Manufacturers can choose special epoxies or change specific epoxy characteristics to meet specific performance or manufacturing requirements. For example, additives can make epoxy resins harder or thicker, making them best suited for use as conformal coatings. Here are some other ways to adjust the characteristics of a particular epoxy resin

 

Correct adhesion to various substrates

Epoxy adhesives bind and seal a variety of substrates, from metal and most plastics to wood and concrete. However, there are also some unsuitable materials, such as low surface energy plastics, including polyolefins, silicone and fluorocarbons. Proceeding with the decision to use epoxy resins on these materials requires them to be pretreated to alter the surface of the substrate.

 

Curing time and storage requirements

Epoxy adhesives are available as one component and more commonly as two component formulations. Individual sorting items usually come in paste form, requiring people to apply them with a trowel to fill in the gaps. These epoxies require heat to cure and refrigeration to maintain their shelf life.

 

The two-component type requires mixing and using the product within a specific time frame, ranging from minutes to hours. These epoxies cure at temperatures slightly above room temperature (about 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit), although more heat speeds up the process.

 

Storage requirements for two-component epoxies are also less stringent than for single-component types. Manufacturers may keep these details in mind when choosing epoxies that meet their manufacturing requirements.

Centipoise (CPS) is the viscosity value applied to an epoxy resin to indicate its flow rate. Low CPS epoxides flow rapidly, but the flow rate slows with increasing CPS. The viscosity of an epoxy resin determines its potential use cases and the way the product is applied.

 

The reduced viscosity also helps to reduce voids. Many manufacturers sell epoxy resins in a variety of viscosities, such as 100-1,500,000 CPS. However, heat also affects viscosity, and exposure to it will thin the consistency of the epoxy resin.

 

Low viscosity epoxies may take 12-24 hours to cure - longer than high viscosity epoxies. High viscosity epoxy resins are suitable for surface coating applications. However, they need to be processed no more than the maximum thickness specified by the manufacturer, usually 1-2 cm.
